"my jackets are my friends" (2020) is a short, self-directed dance film made while in self-isolation at home, due to the COVID-19 virus. The film, shot on an iPhone, captures a solo improvisation score flowing through gestures inspired by movements conducted every day in a domestic space. Flipping between scenes of isolation in a small apartment and an expansive location in nature, the dancer finds solace in connecting with the inanimate objects around their home during this time of limited interaction with other human beings.
Shion Skye Carter is a Japanese-Canadian dance artist from Gifu prefecture, Japan, who is currently based in Vancouver, Canada. Through choreography hybridized with calligraphy, video, sculpture, and sound, her work celebrates the discovery of one’s ethnographic identity and connection to heritage. Shion has performed at venues spanning Vancouver and Halifax, and in 2021 her new solo Residuals (住み・墨) will premiere in Montreal presented by Tangente. In 2018, Shion co-founded the interdisciplinary duo olive theory with musician Stefan Nazarevich. This collaboration allows her to expand the scope of her intimate performances, to experiment at the intersection between embodied performance, installation, and live sound. Alongside her piloted creative endeavours, she performs in projects directed by other artists, including Vanessa Goodman/Action at a Distance and plastic orchid factory. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance and Kinesiology from Simon Fraser University.
